I watched the video you linked, it's amusing and well presented, but if you pause and read the headlines, a lot of the lower numbers (<90%) come from either:
- results on only one dose of a two dose series
- efficacy declining after several months from the second dose
So those ones seem kind of disingenuous to include, especially the former.
(I don't disagree with your general points though)
Oh yeah, and I don't mean to imply that the video I linked is a good example of truth, just that's the sort of thing that gets shared in conservative spaces.
If the response was "wait, WTF is this video? Fauci always just gives us the bare truth", that would be great.
But unfortunately, some of the things that the authorities have lied about have become the ground truth for conservatives, so videos like the one I linked get taken as truth without any additional inspection.
Quick UI issue I noticed - on the English version of the site, some of the text is still in Spanish. For example the banners on the top-right of the photos at https://en.ancana.co/properties say '30% vendido' etc, and the property description on https://en.ancana.co/properties/seis-encantos is in Spanish. (Also, the column title 'Completion Date' is repeated twice in the property details table).
Thanks for taking a peek! As two non-technical founders, we ran into some limitations using Wix. Fortunately, we have a new site launching in a week or so that we are pretty excited about that fixes the bugginess of the current site. Stay tuned!
Don't you also need to buy a phone/computer/tablet to use whatsapp or signal? How does whatsapp is cheaper than facetime? But anyway, yeah, I noticed Facetime's both video and audio calls have better quality, in my personal experience. Also, most if not all my friends and family use iDevices, so I dont need to convince them to install signal/whatsapp/telegram etc... But YMMV.
Yes but a practical new Android phone with reasonable spec (I don't mean cheap Chinese oems with 1gb ram) can be had for $100 and can run WhatsApp/signal fine. The cheapest iphone is $399 iirc, the high entry costs that disqualifies a lot of people even in the US and certainly abroad where apple tax difference compare to base currency of usd399 exceeds regional sales tax differences (mexico for example)
In Brazil a new iPhone 6 costs about two months of the national average raw income, while a cheap Android alternative would be about 1/3rd to 1/4th of an average monthly salary.
Does average monthly salary mean much if the majority is really poor? Assuming you are middle class, here. Also: you probably mean iPhone 12. The 6 is quite old.
I remember my 6 very well as I fell on my motorcycle and I pulled this banana shaped phone out of my pocket.
Off topic... but Brazil is such a wonderful country with great people. The insane import taxes are not fair and I don't think it helps the economy - rather the opposite.
Brazil is such an outlier. I wonder why Bolsenaro didn't do anything about the insane import duties in Brazil. And don't get me started on the difficulty in using financial services there.
Unfortunately we don't, the first target date was 2007, and the numbers looked like we're getting there, but it just never happened. Nowadays there's no target date and the propaganda is eurosceptic, so I'm not holding my breath.
True. That $399 iPhone SE is sold for $540 in Mexico at the Apple store. And middle-class Mexicans have between 1/3 to 1/10 of the buying power of an American counterpart.
Whatsapp ,Skype, Telegram, Google Duo, etc apps work fine on Android phones which are lots less expensive than Apple Devices that are needed for Facetime
Trust me, you don't want to put family on Android. My mother started out with Android (to save money), and she never even fully understood how the bottom buttons worked. I became the customer care. Now she's on iPhone and there's no support burden. Phew.
You don’t usually get to choose what devices people buy. All my family is on Android simply because they’re not interested enough in tech to spend triple the price on an Apple device, and there’s nothing I can say to make them spend that much.
Definitely easier to use than any of the alternatives. An intuitive video calling system should do just that: video (and/or audio), not chat.
Firstly; she has not heard of WhatsApp, it would have to be taught to her that it is a chat app that has additional functionality to allow phone and video calls.
Blank stare.
She does not chat and has no interest in doing that.
The UI of WhatsApp is confusing and unintuitive if you assume you know nearly nothing except that you want to make a video call.
Yeah, definitely some training is needed for that age group. It will be easier for you and me when we grow to be 100+ years old. She clicks on the green symbol that shows a video camera, maybe that helps to recognize. I am sure Google Duo would have an understandable icon as well, so you raise a good point.
macs come with facetime preinstalled (the newer ones at least) and you can send facetime links to people and they can join using the web client if they dont have a mac.
> If you see cooking primarily as a means of getting nutrients rather than a hobby, I very strongly recommend getting an electric pressure cooker.
Oh hi there!
Do you have any recipes that you recommend? I actually bought an Instant Pot a couple months ago, and so far have found one great one pot meal that I cook in bulk on the weekend - basically tomatoes + sweet potatoes + peppers + beans + quinoa. Toss it all in and press a button, magic.
I like to eat as healthily as possible, so I'm interested to hear if you have any go-to staple recipes for the instant pot that you'd suggest :)
When i'm cooking in this mode, i use a rice cooker to cook lentils, the Puy / French / lentilles vertes / speckled type. I like those because they retain a lot of texture when cooked, and have a decent flavour. Dry lentils, olive oil (apply to the dry lentils and stir to coat), water, fraction of a stock cube or some miso paste, garlic, herbs, spices, whatever else you like; cook on the white rice programme. Extremely easy, pretty tasty, and with loads of scope for variation.
As an addition, sliced chorizo is great, the spicy pork fat melts out and improves everything. Lardons are almost as good. You can float a chicken thigh on top, and it will cook nicely, but won't get crispy, but you can finish it up under the grill. Sliced onion is remarkably good, soaks up the stock and comes out juicy. I often add leafy brassicas like cabbage or kale, not very exciting but it's healthy.
I've used the same rice cooker on a slow cooking setting to cook beef ragout, something like cassoulet, and pork knuckle.
A pressure cooker can do all this, but can do the high-temperature bits faster!
Wow, thanks. That sounds very tasty. I've cooked lentils, but only indian-curry-style and on a stove, never in a rice cooker. Can I ask how long you cook them for in the rice cooker? I imagine dried lentils to be like beans in that they require pre-soaking and/or a long cooking time - is that right? Also, do you add the kale in near the end, or let it cook the whole way through?
Not sure of your dietary preferences, but one of the big advantages of the Instant Pot is being able to cook cheaper, less palatable cuts of meat. It can also cook an entire frozen chicken in under an hour...
I do eat chicken a few times a week, so this is good to know, especially the ability to cook from frozen. Could I just throw some frozen chicken breasts in there with whatever else I want to eat it with, and pressure cook it for say 30 mins?
I've been using my instant pot and your meal sounds great but I am unfortunately hopeless at cooking. Can you let me know what you do with those ingredients? Do you dice the potatoes/peppers? Do you have to cook the beans/quinoa first? How long?
You'll want to cut up the potatoes and peppers, but when you're cooking them like this, the size doesn't matter much, it's just what you prefer. I'd go a bit chunkier -- smaller will have all the flavors blend more, chunkier and you'll be able to taste the separate ingredients a bit better.
Quinoa definitely does not need to be pre-cooked -- it cooks very quickly. If you're putting in dry beans, you'll want to use the "multigrain" setting for... 60 minutes I think? And add plenty of water for the beans and quinoa to absorb.
If you're using canned beans or pre-cooked beans, you can drop that time down to 15 minutes or so, that should be plenty for the quinoa to cook.
I'd also probably add some spices. You just gotta experiment and see what you like. Make sure you add enough -- when making a big pot of food, don't just add a little spice. I think cumin and/or coriander would go nicely with this. Cinnamon is another that might be good here. Can't go wrong with black pepper.
But really, this is a dish that could go nicely with lots of different spice blends. So don't be afraid to experiment! Try stuff, fail, it's ok, and it's how you get a feel for cooking. If it doesn't come out great, spread some hot sauce on there and it might make it good enough to eat :)
Great comment, thank you! Feels like cooking is a skill a lot like programming where you can be stuck in tutorial hell without ever actually learning anything. I'd like to get out of that and your about just trying things out and seeing how they taste helped me shift my mindset about it
The basic idea is:
- Chop up the sweet potatoes, peppers, and onions. This takes me a while lol.
- Start with saute mode, heat the oil, fry the onions, then add the garlic, spices, peppers. The saute part overall just takes me around 5-6 mins
- Add broth, quinoa, chopped tomatoes, and cook on high pressure for 8 mins (the actual cooking time is longer because it takes some time to reach high pressure, and then to depressurise when done)
- I use canned beans, so I just stir them in right here at the end and let them mix for 5-10 mins
(But this is all described in that recipe)
I can basically make 8 good sized portions of this if I fill my Instant Pot, and it's cheap and very healthy. So it's become almost my go-to meal. Oh, and it freezes well too!
I'm so glad to see this posted! It's a great resource. I wonder if it's less well known because people prefer video content and/or it's rather formal and not very gentle.
Thing is, I see a reasonable number of ads on Reddit, they're just rarely relevant to the subreddit I'm on. I think they could keep the same number of ads and target them better, and the results would improve.
It's funny to see this on HN now - I think this is a real issue, particularly as a dev with all the random libraries we download and run (cough npm cough), and I just got finished with protecting myself against this issue.
What I did: my MacBook Pro now has two separate MacOS installations, each on a separate partition with full disk encryption/filevault enabled, and separate passwords/encryption keys. One is strictly 'personal' - it has the bare minimum of software installed, and everything remotely sensitive (email, banking, passwords) happens here. The other is where I code and install whatever I want, and nothing personal touches this OS.
It can be inconvenient during the day, but I also treat my smartphone as a secure device (iOS) so there's that.
So those ones seem kind of disingenuous to include, especially the former.
(I don't disagree with your general points though)
