the current AI summer has been great for us dorks that prefer TUI/console interfaces. I hope it all sticks around with the inevitable cool-down in LLM hype.

I dunno if he's got a cognitive bias but he's certainly been a great example of how being a genius in one field does not make you qualified to even comment in other unrelated fields. And that's been going on for close to 2 decades now.

That's the fun part. One revolutionary discovery and every "expert" becomes a mere bonafide fool.

"good" is not important for software anymore, at least in the regular consumer market. Companies have discovered that people will just continue to accept subpar, unfinished and sometimes even partially-functioning software.

"accept" is such a weird word for this, though I don't know of a better one in English.

What we seem to be experiencing is a combination of monopoly power/abuse, and regulatory/government/court capture to keep it in place.

if internet comments are any kind of indication (which they very well may not be) I've seen lots of people complaining about win11 but remaining because they can't give up playing their favorite online hero shooter. That's acceptance to me

"tolerate" would be the better word to describe it

Agree that acceptance is irrelevant. No one has a choice, because all the “competitors” in any given niche (phone, cloud platform, PC operating system) are executing the same play. Enshittify, extract profit from ~suckers~ customers, ignore any churn because with the limited choices available there will be new suckers to replace them.

We accept this the same way we accept the air quality wherever we are.

Yes, Linux is there, but consider the barriers to the average person of truly adopting a strict Free Software life. Consider how many things in life now simply demand for you to have an Android or iOS phone. Things as simple as parking.

Well, now no one has to convince anyone to shell out for upgrades because everything is a subscription. What worked perfectly well can now get replaced out from under you overnight

I can't speak to years past but HN is an off-shoot of a VC firm so it's not too surprising that the culture here is based in the California Ideology milieu.

But it isn't the VC that brings the users here for the most part(I'm literally assuming this, but it seems reasonable), it's word of mouth. Did you join because you love YC, or was it because you thought it was an interesting website at some point?

Joined because I loved yc, sv, and it’s my home. There’s a guy running around my neighborhood beating people with a pipe. I hope something like Flock can deal with it. I don’t know why people get on here and post agitprop.

Genuinely not sure if serious.

It's a well(ish) known org with well known product, and they seem to have been vulnerable. If they had attacked a deli in Newark, would we be having this conversation?

Canonical literally has a DOD team. They are a military contractor

I think the saying is "so open-minded your brain fell out"

sometimes they don’t even have a brain to begin with

That a sports league was empowered by the courts to do this in first place is buck wild to me. I live in America, so it's not like I'm unaccustomed to the government giving preferential treatment to corporations but I cannot fathom a court allowing the NFL to tell ISPs to block IPs across the entire country.

America produces many things more valuable than the NFL, is the difference. LaLiga is presently the single most valuable brand in Spain. When e.g. Google asks low-polarization parts of the government for things, it frequently gets them.

if someone is trying to use LLM tools in a project that explicitly forbids the use of LLM tools, they are not innocent.

if someone is blinding slurping up content to feed to LLMs, without checking to see if a particular source is OK with that, they are arguably not innocent either.

Neither situation is analogous to a booby-trapped shotgun door blowing off the face of a would-be burglar.

That some trees in a mudslide veer to the left does not mean that your house isn't going to be plowed down the hillside.

The momentum of the mass-entity that is Google simply cannot be overridden by some outliers trying to change direction.

It's a micro-implant pump connected to your brain to deliver adderall directly to your hypothalamus. EZPZ
