I'm there for my kids, and I am consistent. Consistency is something that I felt I never had from my dad, and it's so important to just do what you promise. Kids have good days and bad - they're volatile as they are growing. You just have to be the ever-present dad.
I hadn't considered outside council. That's a good idea. The issue with everybody being remote is that our corporate safe is difficult to get into (we are on a two-key system), but an outside entity is worth looking into.
That's an interesting idea, thanks. And I agree- we do not use the root accounts for anything. I'm much more concerned about the bus factor with physical key access.
Yes, you are totally correct. We don't use our root account now, and we keep our our corporate Yubikeys in a safe with a 2-key access lock. The issue is that fewer and fewer people have access to the safe due to geography. I'm worried about our in-city bus factor.
I dig this. If I were ever blessed with the opportunity to run a private, profitable company these are the types of people I would want to hire and retain. Building a company with a slice of my citizens. My local food distribution company had the volunteer fire chief on payroll in a town that couldn't afford to pay a salary for a full time chief. I think it was a great civic service to let him leave work when we had calls during the day.
Everyone operating at scale in the food supply chain needs an executive with medical/scientific expertise. The risks from foodborne illnesses are real.
It feels like an eternity ago but there were several major food scares, recalls, and deaths, from contaminated vegetables last year.
I disagree. If everybody held the opinion that their actions wouldn't amount to anything, nothing would ever change. Climate change is the single largest event that will occur in our lifetimes, and we all need to help pitch in to stop the raise in global temperatures.
On the Reddit post this originated from [0], it says that the motivation from the ex-employee was "help us identifying wifi problems and tracking users in the area around the Managers office". Makes me wonder if it was malicious or just stupidity.
I have really enjoyed reading peoples recommendations on what they have learned and how they have grown, this post on "What has the past 12 months taught you?" is really interesting: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=17316120
I agree - I know that my organization would see an increase in performance, as 90%+ of our transactions are committed. I am excited to see this in action.
