Ok, just my perspective, that you dont need to share. I am typing on lenovo P51, not really a new thing, but I have two TB SSDs, 2 slots for normal ram (32gb currently), i7, no overheating, great keyboard, battery and simple possibility to just dismantle the lower part (or if needed the whole laptop) and blow all the dust out or vacuum clean it. Running linux where all the hardware (except the fingerprint reader which I would not use anyway) is supported.
Once something dies I can replace it at any time on my own and the prices for replacement parts are actually going down, not up. It is "a tad" heavier but on the other side, I would carry the backpack with me regardless of weight (and now I can skip a fitness session :D).
Why on earth are you even buying apple laptops? Ok, I do understand it for nontechnical people but we are on HN. I just dont understand a reasoning why you dont get yourself a proper laptop instead and all the convenience that comes with that. "Its beautiful" reason?
I would imagine you actually do work on your laptop and the look is not your primary criteria when buying a work rig (although I have always loved Thinkpad boxy designs).
My perspective that you don't need to agree with, is that the P51 is a hideous monster that weighs exactly twice as much as my MacBook, the asymmetric keyboard + touchpad would drive me crazy, it doesn't run macOS and has worse battery life. Also my fingerprint reader works, just like every other part of the machine, along with all the software I use. There's no "except".
