I think it’s pretty obvious that the cringe-worthy part is the story-selection. To refer to anoyher headline, do they run a story every time some Englishman fucks a goat? No, of course not; it’s only newsworthy if it’s [minority you should hate].
Hats are pretty objectively an ineffecient use of cloth, here. Roads are incredibly expensive to maintain societally because cars cause so much wear-and-tear; cars, maintenance, and insurance are expensive on the individual; lack of foot-traffic is expensive for business-owners; individual car-use is much more expensive on the planet and power grid; travel is more difficult & and dangerous for children and old-folks… it goes on and on.
Having sprawling towns that require cars to get around is pretty obviously a bad idea from so many fronts. Trains, trolleys, and bikes are better on all these points.

Actually the wear and tear due to cars is minimal compared to that of trucks. The relationship of wear to mass is nonlinear. Which isn't to say that buttering half the earth with asphalt isn't a seemingly absurd use of resources.
I would argue it being proprietary would be completely unacceptable, for such a position of importance.
In any case, Git has become tremendously entrenched over the past couple decades. Anything that hopes to replace it would have to be significantly better to break from the inertia Git has. I’m honestly skeptical as to whether this is even possible in the near future. We’re not at all in the same historical moment as when SVN was beaten out.
yeah, it used to be that things like Perforce could still exist, because when they were created, they could do things that their OSS equivalents could not.
but since then, so many people have gotten used to the basic model that git offers (even if they still have issues with details of the syntax).
to gain a foothold in this environment is a monumental task, and anything that wasn't unambiguously libre and probably gratis too has little hope.
I was just thinking that. I first started using Git to interact with Subversion repositories as a better svn than svn, and I'm surely not the only one.
git's replacement won't be there because it was better at being what git is (too entrenched), but because git became redundant as the world changed around it. As agentic development takes over and people stop caring about source code, all the tooling (including languages themselves) and approaches to assist humans will be ripe for replacing with those for machines.
Not near as much as you'd like to believe. It takes years for us to grow up, get an education and become useful. Changing what we do can be quite difficult, especially with the time and monetary costs of doing so. Plus inroads by technology can wipe jobs quickly even if they'll eventually be replaced.
When you have a bunch of people scared that they'll starve tomorrow society will fall apart (even more than it has). The rise to authoritarianism will lead to rather bad outcomes in the medium term.
Chess is actually an incredibly good counter-example: The moment women’s chess clubs and teams started proliferating, women started participating much more. Chess had a “guy’s club” connotation to them, and women were effectively excluded because of that. No intentionally excluded, obviously, but effectively.
