Well, if you are designing such a system, you'd want to make sure that you hook into the close page function and give an alert saying 'If you close this page, the file will not finish saving' or something of the sort. Also, you'd probably want to design it such that the 'file save' operation is one of the first things you do rather than the last.

1. They aren't being brought down. 2. People who feel 'stuck' in their job because it pays better than minimum wage can switch jobs a lot easier now. Because of that, you'd probably see wages rise, since it takes time for those skills to develop after people leave.

Yeah, I like to extend this out and make it generic like this:

If you don't test it, how do you know?

For example, one person told me he can't understand antivirus software and why people buy it, because he never got a virus. I asked him "how do you know you didn't get a virus?". He just looked at me, not saying a word. I hope my point got across though. If you aren't checking, you don't know. Same could be said about hacking these days. You secure your system, that's good, but if you don't have something to detect hackers, you are the same as the guy without antivirus and the guy without tested backups. You just have no idea whether or not you are protected.

Though to be fair, the people telling me that I might have a virus are the people who want me to give them money.

"How do you know you didn't get a virus?"

I don't. But it's not epistemically clean to let other people set your priors for things like risk, if they have a financial interest in making you worry.

Thats pretty much a variation on the Lucas Critique.

And sadly one reason why IT is a easy department for the beancounters to downsize.

It is low because that's a preorder price. They need the money so they can order in bulk from the factory.

In any case, I don't believe that's the entire cost of the unit, I think that's just 'put x dollars down to be put on the preorder list' and you just might have to pay the full amount later.

Well, I'd ask for a portfolio, and if you do have some programmer friends that do have the experience, I'd ask them if they can sit in an interview with you. If a portfolio is not possible, I'd ask for some technologies that they've worked with, and try to find a project which uses those technologies. I'd ask for a work sample using whatever they are comfortable with, such as the 'TodoMVC' implementation, something small that can be finished in 4 hours that shows their skill. This isn't like you are hiring just a programmer, this is going to be one of the first programmers you hire, the one likely to set the standards. Yes, he may not respect your programming skill, but that's to be expected, programmers are prideful of their work. However they can be respectful of you while giving you the rundown of why what you wrote was wrong. You want to hire someone who is better than you at programming. At the same time you don't want someone who is an ass, that should be pretty easy to figure out.

Reminds me kind of like Triangle Boy from 2001. That was a CIA funded project. I wouldn't doubt that they could be up to their old tricks again.

This is really nothing here, McCain doesn't have an HTTPS page either, and I suspect most senators wouldn't have a secure site. It's really a public website... so, no big deal.

Ah, but it's not IIS, this is something less than IIS called HTTP.sys which is used by SSRS in sql 2008 or 2012. It's also used by some other windows services, so chances are you wouldn't even know you are running http.sys unless your software specifically mentioned it.

Piracetam is one of the most popular ones, it's not hard to find, and it works for most people, or not. The most common side effect is muscle twitches or headaches. Headaches are caused by a reduction of the amount of choline, and eating eggs or taking a choline supplement makes the headache go away. Generally the twitches are not severe and don't affect voluntary movements. The side effects subside upon stopping. I'd say it's a completely different effect than caffeine, as it allows me to concentrate for extended periods and have instant recall. If it is a placebo effect, then whatever it is, it works. Placebo effect means there is an effect because there is expected to be one, so in any case it's useful. Piracetam's effects on the body are well documented, since it's been in use for about 35 years now. That said, I don't think this gives you any more rest, nor does taking it make it so you can't sleep. In fact, if I take too much I feel sleepy almost immediately and wake up feeling pretty good. In any case, these people taking nootropics are the new normal.

I tried the racetams but they don't do anything for me. Modafinil does work though but tolerance develops quickly.

Caffeine of course is still #1 for me in terms of efficacy. I'm not desperate enough to use harder stimulants like ephedrines or amphetamines or phenethylamines etc.

And that's the thing about these, you try some, find out what works for you. I don't see anything ethically wrong with taking a brain booster if it improves your performance at work. If you can do that instead of burning out and you really love your job, why not?

Web-based email was launched in Q1 1995 actually.

So it doesn't predate webmail at all.
