I'm currently reading Foucault's history of sexuality, and the reason you might want this is because population!

Obviously we are facing a population crisis, and we will need more bodies for the factories and retirement homes. Or at least this was the idea in the 1800s. We might have morally coated it with religion, but biopower is a real thing.

The current hypothesis is that the ever evolving LGBTQ+ is a way to sell niche products to these groups. You can imagine that with every new gender, there is a facebook ad and amazon order to be sold.

I don't really believe this, I'm an anti-realist and I think continental philosophy is BS... but this is a classic. Also, there are sooo many ways our sexual taboos are all about economics. Once you see it, you cant unsee.

I'm wary of reasoning that boils down to using utilitarian arguments to back up moralistic fundamentalism - especially when there are so many other things that would achieve similar results but continue to go unaddressed. We could start with making sure every child has abundant access to food and healthcare so they grow up as healthy as possible. We could address the economic treadmill wherein two incomes have become de facto mandatory, causing many straight women who want kids to put it off indefinitely. And if increasing our population is a desirable goal, we could even use public money to outright subsidize the cost of caring for kids. Never mind America-first policies like immigration to increase our own population at the expense of other countries.

> You can imagine that with every new gender, there is a facebook ad and amazon order to be sold.

This is veering off into conspiratorial thinking land. Of course there is an element of truth to it. But that same element of truth applies to basically every other meme as well.

@srslyTrying2hlp

FWIW I didn't say "no". I said it was dubious to place emphasis on that specific approach when there are other approaches that could help the same goal and are more in line with our Western values, but they aren't being followed (in fact they're closer to being actively rejected!)

In general it's extremely important to exercise one's judgement/heuristics of which arguments are worthy of focus, lest one end up being taken in by superficial criticisms and actually end up harming the thing you're claiming to want to fix. Like in this instance the proponents of religious fundamentalism are also responsible for pushing a lot of backwards policy that actively harms children once they've been born - their own heuristics are just wildly out of touch with the modern world.

@srslyTrying2hlp

I'd say you're using this idea of "fallibility" as a license to make unsubstantiated assertions and then avoid responsibility for the implications. Or maybe you just need to put down the bong, detox, and touch grass. Nobody is "denying reality and science" here.

I tried doing this with csv files (and for an online solution, Google Sheets)

I ended up just buying a VPS, putting openclaw on it, and letting it Postgres my app.

I feel like this article is outdated since the invention of OpenClaw/Claude Opus level AI Agents. The difficulty is no longer programming.

We need a financial way to reward the resistance. Big corps do not care, as we saw them cave to Apple.

Anyway, I did my part, basically I only use FDroid. I filled this out: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfN3UQeNspQsZCO2ITk...

>Combat astroturfing: when you encounter suspect posts on community forums and social media in support of the policy (“Well, actually…”), challenge them and do not be shy.

Someone contact Dang, because this is now allowed. I have been suspicious HN has actively supported astroturfers over the years for some sort of financial or mutually beneficial gain.

Anyway I basically changed to web apps. They are much easier to deal with and develop.

F-Droid really does have some great stuff, and you can know that the default posture is user respect rather than the opposite situation of the Play Store. I've started almost exclusively using F-Droid, excepting only for a few core apps that aren't available there (much to my disappointment).

If you haven't searched/browsed F-Droid in the last few years, do it. You'll likely be pleasantly surprised.

F-Droid is amazing. I basically wont install anything from the playstore unless its my bank or something.

Video games on F-Droid are how Android games should be. They have the spirt: No ads, no micro transactions, etc..

Kids educational games are the same. I have been using those games only for years and I've had 0 issues. Playstore games, you get an update and now your progress is frozen unless you pay.

Guitar tuner? same

File explorer, image viewer, etc... Same

Everything: same

Fully agree. Can you recommend some games, and kids educational games? I've tried a few and like them, but would love some recs.

The ones I like: Breakout 71, Chess, Word Maker, Word Tracer, Roboyard, FaFa Runner (short but briefly fun), Minesweeper (Privacy Friendly), Simon Tatham's Puzzles, SuperTuxKart, Tux Rider.

Vector Pinball is a must have.

Here you go: https://eff.org, https://edri.org, https://noyb.eu

Those links would be more effective if you were to spend a couple of lines explaining what these organizations are and what they do...

These are NGOs fighting for our digital rights like privacy, security and device ownership. Wikipedia can explain much better than me.

Well, actually I've long held the view that accusations of astroturfing, shilling, being a Chinese/Russian/CIA/MAGA/Soros/Martian bot, etc, are just people being too lazy to take on arguments they dislike with well-reasoned arguments of their own, but needing some sort of a quick "exit strategy" out of a conversation. Maybe this isn't true on Facebook, but here or on Reddit it is always far more likely that you're talking to an actual, possibly very wrong/bad, human being.

What is perfectly reasonable and rational is to only respond to clearly written arguments with some evidence of thought and time invested in them, and to consider others to be too low-effort or spammy to invest time in responding to. But guess what? Real humans spam for free, they're mostly not paid to do so by the PRC or George Soros.

> far more likely that you're talking to an actual, possibly very wrong/bad, human being.

Is it? I can't name another social media site that is simultaneously more ubiquitous than HN and bereft of any anti-spam measures.

I dont think you should have been downvoted. Processing and memory are the only thing that matters. (Unless we are being so nontechnical now that we just say things like Pixel 9 is great...)

My only issue with AI is that its so verbose.

What we should encourage are people to simplify with AI.

There was that literal 9 page rant by the other day and people had no idea what he was trying to say (too technical language, a poor writer, and seemingly unedited). That could have benefited greatly.

Once you realize Apple and Nintendo have 'understandings' with media outlets, you will start to realize this is just marketing.

Its more impressive when Apple does it because they are so far behind.

I remember being excited when Apple got widgets because then I could add my 'Next Alarm time' to my home screen. Made my company work phone usable on trips.

I wonder when they are going to get NVIDIA cards or CUDA? Then they can actually run LLMs and not just trick people into buying it under the 30 year old idea of 'Unified Memory'.

It's kinda funny that macOS supported CUDA when it was a tech demo, but then ideologically objects to it once it's a $3 trillion business.

They've had to be dragged kicking and screaming away from the NPU model only to admit that GPGPU tech was the right choice.

Yeah I remember that. Very Apple of them.

'Cool demo' -> Doesnt convert to tangible things.

Wont attempt to compete with companies better than them, but go their own route. "oh look it consumes low power!" (Things no one cared about).

They are the Nintendo of tech.

With AI, I have a hard time thinking wordpress needs to exist anymore. I used to be a huge huge fan.

>I think AI is in a unique state right now where it's not smart enough to replace software developers

Uh..... Do you know about AI Agents? Claude Opus?

Dont judge AI on the instant chatGPT model.

Its so verbose... I wish AI could simplify things.
