The main point of the paper is that whole Hi-Tech industry (i.e. Startups also as part of that industry) consumes more capital from the rest of the economy than gives back to the economy (especially it is true for consumer products oriented hi-tech companies). This situation was possible due to constant money issuing to the economy via finance sector. That process started in the late 70 and often called as Reaganomics. More details are in paper.
In general if issuing of money stops, the 25-35% of USA economy will disappear. Most of that 25-35% are Hi-Tech companies.
So, economics of startups are in danger. VCs firms don't have hot money anymore for funding. No more easy exits such as IPO and aquisition. Customer spending are going down.
I would like to have mind mapping (like http://www.mindjet.com/) right inside excel (as well as for other office applications) but it should be tightly integrated. It seems to me such type functionality might be useful for data crunching and modeling with full brain thinking. Spreadsheets enable only logical half of brain so there is room for improvement.
It like google with schizophrenia. Pretty impressive. It seems like drugs and alcohol as mind enhancer for creative people (writers, designers, painters) is obsoleted now :-)
If it was 1928 year now, would this portfolio have survived Great Depression? Almost all positions are paper actives. What do happen with the paper actives in case of huge world economical slowdown and depression? I prefer something more reliable than paper (gold, land, real estate, cash flow from the business)
I believe it should, but am interested in your speculation as to how you think it would hold up. About half of it is not in equities (cash, bonds, commodities, real estate). And I did not include actual land holdings in the %s (including our personal residence), which brings it up to a majority. Also, some of the equities are international, and we are in a much more global environment now as compared to 1928. Over 40% of large cap earnings are from abroad.
Are you saying that you hold 100% of your assets in gold and land?
"Cash flow from the business" was specifically excluded from the question, i.e. income does not enter into it.
"build on demand hardware" - it means build funny electronic devices(in Ponoko way)? Or it would be something serious HW stuff like PCB for custom device?
Do you mean building on demand hardware something like assembling pcs with 4 gb memory OR building fpgas (or asics) that solve your client's problems in hardware?
I plan to run new product and I need to do PR support for my new starting company and for my product on market. Unfortunately I don't have any experience with PR stuff.
