Query though, it says “Protruding roof tiles or wooden canopies often shielded the fruit trees from rain, hail and bird droppings“ I get most of that but are bird droppings really a problem?

In the city, yes. Think pigeon shit rather than sparrow droppings. Cleaning the fruit would be labour intensive and if not done lead to spoilage.
