For theoretical physicists that may be that case. I think it is intuitive that the cost of new discoveries increases the more we know about a universe that probably has a limited amount of laws.

But on the other hand there are still unlimited opportunities for applied physics without having to go into more metaphysical fields. Material and energy research, optics...

I think we are still more or less brute forcing optimal lens setups for specific applications with complex simulators to fit specific applications. Useful to be a physicist in that case.
