Nothing plugged in except the included power supply. Screen will remain black. Or, screen will power on, display nothing. Or, screen will power on, mouse cursor will appear, but no password prompt.

You should return it and get a free replacement. It’s clearly defective.

No, this is a software problem, not a hardware problem. The replacement would exhibit the same behavior.
