Moby Dick is a fascinating book, and I think part of what makes it work so well is the alternating, aside-heavy style that the second review laments. A discourse about whaling or a novel just about going after the white whale would have both been interesting reads, but the way the they're woven together makes them stronger than either element would have been on their own.
