Anova to start charging a subscription fee for their sous vide cooker app (arstechnica.com)

They've replaced Bluetooth with Wifi connectivity in all new models and now give their backend costs as a justification for needing an app subscription:

  Anova's CEO has suggested that the decision to start charging 
  a fee was inevitable financially, writing, "Our community has
  literally cooked 100s of millions of times with our app. 
  Unfortunately, each connected cook costs us money.
